How to play sudoku

The grid has 9 rows, 9 columns and nine 3 × 3 boxes. Fill the empty squares so that every row, every column and every box contains the numbers 1 to 9, each exactly once. No arithmetic is needed: the numbers are just symbols.

Which level should I choose?

  • Easy puzzles can always be finished by finding a square where only one number fits. A good start for new solvers and for a relaxed group session.
  • Medium puzzles also need the opposite question: in this row, where can the 7 go? There is always one square that works.
  • Hard puzzles have fewer clues and may need a pencil to note possibilities.

Every puzzle is checked by computer to have exactly one solution, so no guessing is ever required to be right.

Tips for older eyes and hands

Print on plain white paper at 100% scale (“Actual size”), and use a soft pencil so mistakes rub out. For a group, the easy pack gives everyone the same six puzzles, so neighbours can compare progress. More help is in our printing guide.
